Anitha is a former Indian professional basketball player who captained the women's basketball team. She is also the assistant coach of Indian U-16 women basketball team.
Born on 22 June 1985 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Anita is a B.Com graduate from Madras University and MBA(HRM) from Annamalai University. She started playing basketball at the age of 11. The game was recommended by her school basketball coach and she gradually gained interest in it.
Anitha is the youngest to captain the Senior Indian women basketball team. She captained the team for eight years. Anitha played for 18 years from 2000 to 2017 winning 30 medals. She is the only Indian to play nine Asian Basketball Confederation(ABC) championships continuously representing the Indian national team.
Anitha is a specialist in 3v3 tournaments. She won the gold medal in 1st 3v3 FIBA Asian Championship held at Doha in 2013. This wonderful player led the team and finished the championship with the most number of assists. She won a silver medal in Asian Indoor Games at Vietnam in 2009, gold medal in South Asian Beach Games held at Sri Lanka in 2011 and another gold medal during the 3rd Asian Beach Games that were held at Haiyan, China back in 2012.
Anitha was offered the contract to play in Thailand after the impressive skills shown at the 3rd Asian Beach Games in China, where she led India’s 3×3 basketball squad to a gold medal win, going undefeated throughout the championship and defeating China in the final.
She is not officially retired but is currently coaching U-16 Indian women's team and has informed the Basketball Federation of India that once she retires from the sport she would write the necessary requirements with respect to eligibility for a coach.
