Tennis: The Vintage Racket Sport

When it comes to racket sports no other sport can match the popularity of Tennis. It is one of the most-watched and followed sports around the world. Tennis is played by hitting a hollow rubber ball with a racket in singles or doubles matches.


The development of Tennis is associated with the game known as Jeu De Paume which was extensively played in the 12th century. This is the sport which lays the foundation of modern-day Tennis.


The term Tennis was professionally used for the sport since the 16th century when rackets came into existence and it became very popular in England and France.

International Tennis Federation is the highest governing body of the sports and it was established in the year 1913. There are almost 211 countries associated with ITF right now.

Tennis was a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984 Summer Olympics and it became an official Olympic sport in the 1988 Summer Olympics.


There are more than millions of players of Tennis all around the globe and the four major Grand Slam Tournaments of Tennis are:-

· Australian Open (Played on Hard Court)

· US Open (Played on Hard Court)

· French Open (Played on Clay Court)

· Wimbledon (Played on Grass Court)


These tournaments have given fame to many of the players of the world and made International sporting stars such as Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova, Williams sisters, and many others.

The sport requires great persistence and a strong mind. At times, the match becomes extensively long when tie-breaker comes. This is where Tennis tests the sportsman and his will to win.


Tennis is also very popular in India. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) is the governing body of Tennis in India and it was established in the year 1920. Champion Series, Super Series, Talent Series, and Chennai Open are the major Tennis tournaments held in India.


India is home to many of the internationally recognized Tennis stars of the world such as Mahesh Bhupathi, Leander Peas, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna. These stars have provided India with many International open cups win. Tennis is a vintage sport that is hugely popular even in the modern days. It is a great sport for recreation as well as to pursue a carrier in.
