Thongkhosiem Haokip - The Prodigal Son of Manipur

Popularly known as Semboi Haokip in the Indian domestic football circuit, Thongkhosiem Haokip is playing for Bengaluru FC in the ongoing edition of the Indian Super League. With the team lacking a proper Indian striker, Thongkhosiem Haokip will have a big role to play in ISL 7 for BFC.

Born and brought up in Manipur, Thongkhosiem Haokip started his footballing career at a very young age during his schooling days. The young lad from Gangpijang followed the footsteps of other north-eastern players and plied his trade. The player joined United Sports Association in Khurai and remained with the Manipuri outfit until Pune FC scouted the player. The player joined the senior side of Pune FC in 2013 from where the player’s career took an upward turn. The player moved to FC Goa ahead of the 2015/16 season after his two-year stay at Pune FC.

The player featured for the I-League side, Salgaocar FC, and Indian Super League side, Kerala Blasters FC within a season. However, it was the loan spell with SC East Bengal that helped the player to find regular playing time. Though he failed to score goals in abundance, it was the eight games in a short time that helped to regain the mojo.

Ahead of Bengaluru FC’s inclusion in the league, the player was roped in by the Bengaluru outfit. Since his move to BFC, the player has averaged 12 games a season. In 36 games for Bengaluru FC across all the competitions, Semboi Haokip has ten goals to his name. Also, the player has assisted twice. With Bengaluru FC having the AFC Cup appearance in the 2020/21 season, Semboi Haokip will have a big role to play for the team.
