Dipa Karmakar: The girl with Golden Wings

Dipa Karmakar is an Indian female gymnast who represented India at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janerio. She secured 4th position in the Women's Vault Gymnastics event. She is from Agartala in Tripura. Dipa started gymnastics when she was 6 years old under the guidance of the coach Soma Nandi & Bisweshwar Nandi. In the beginning, she was pulled back by her flat foot (a physical condition that affects the performance of the athletes) but this didn't stop her and with her fighting spirit, she developed an arch in her foot. She was also a member of the 2010 Commonwealth Games gymnastics contingent. Competing in the senior category at the 2011 National Games she won 4 gold medals at Floor, Balance Beam, Uneven Bars, and Vault at all the four events. In July 2014 at the Commonwealth Games, she became the first Indian Women Gymnast to win a Bronze Medal in Women's Vault event. She becomes the fifth woman in the World to lend the handspring double front and secured 4th position in the event. This gave her recognition and glory around the world. In the latter half of 2017, she suffered from an injury during the practice due to which she withdrew her name from the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Dipa made a stronger comeback in Turkey in 2018 at FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup. She won the Gold Medal and became the first Indian women gymnast to win an International Medal. She was awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in the year 2016 and the Padma Shri award in 2017.
